Firefighters responding to South Side nursing home discover high carbon monoxide levels

(CHICAGO) Paramedics responding to a patient at a nursing home Thursday morning in the South Side Grand Boulevard neighborhood discovered high levels of carbon monoxide at the facility.

The Fire Department responded to Community Care Center at 4314 S. Wabash Ave. at 6:50 a.m., Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.

When medics went into the building, the detectors they wear on their clothing went off, indicating elevated levels of carbon monoxide, he said.

Firefighters were able to fix the problem within an hour without evacuating the entire nursing home, Langford said.

The patient from the initial call was transported to a hospital for a non-related medical reason, but no one else was hospitalized, he added.

Langford said the building did not appear to have working carbon monoxide detectors.
