This week, members of the Chicago Teachers Union will conduct a vote to determine if they will strike.
The CTU will conduct a strike vote December 9 – 11. State law says 75 percent of members must approve a strike for one to take place. The CTU has some 27,000 members.
If teachers vote to walk the picket line, it probably wouldn’t happen until March because of a lengthy fact-finding process with the union and Chicago Public Schools. It’s during that process that CPS would make offers on issues that are contested by the union.
The CTU says a so called test strike vote last month shows members would strike, although the test ballot never directly asked if the members wanted to strike, but instead asked about issues facing union members.
CTU went on strike in 2012. Their latest contract expired over the summer.
