Aldermen, union blast Mondelez for job cuts

(CHICAGO)  Aldermen gathered on the city’s southwest side Wednesday afternoon to speak out against a Nabisco bakery outsourcing jobs to Mexico.

18th Ward Derrick Curtis said that “corporate greed” was the reason Mondelez is moving 600 jobs out of the factory at 73rd and Kedzie. Bob Reiter, the secretary-treasurer of the Chicago Federation of Labor, claimed Mondelez wanted $93 million from the city in worker concessions to keep the jobs.

A former employee who was laid off, Michael Smith, echoed Curtis’ sentiments, noting that CEO Irene Rosenfeld made $20 million last year, yet the company moved jobs to Mexico to increase profits.

Oreo cookies made at that plant brought in an estimated $2.9 billion in annual sales last year.
