(CHICAGO) — Illinois Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) tells Big John and Ray on WLS that he had hoped that the House would send Gov. Bruce Rauner a budget because it included much of what Rauner wanted.
Lawmakers in Springfield adjourned the spring session Wednesday without meeting the May 31 deadline for adopting a state budget.
Cullerton says the key is Republicans in the House.
“You know what, if there’s enough people to stand up on their hind legs over there and say, you know what governor, your mismanaging the government, we’re having disastrous results here, we need to do a deal with the Democrats and we’ll get the compromises you had originally agreed to. We’ll pass your original budget with your original tax break and then it doesn’t make any difference what the governor says because they could override him and we could override him,” Cullerton said.
Cullerton had worked with Republicans in the State Senate to produce a budget.
Now it will take a supermajority in both houses to approve a budget if one is to take effect before the fiscal year begins July 1.
