(CHICAGO) — It’s the largest personal injury verdict in Cook County and the woman at the center of the case speaks out.
Tierney Darden, 26, spoke publicly for the first time Thursday saying the ordeal has been difficult for her and her family. The paralyzed dancer was awarded $148 million after a jury found the City of Chicago responsible for her injuries when a bus shelter collapsed on her during a 2015 storm.
“My legs were taken away and those were the two things I needed to do the one thing that I loved which was dance,” Darden told reporters.
Attorney Patrick Salvi says the verdict is justified as Darden will require 24-hour care for the rest of her life.
In a statement, the city says it is evaluating their legal options.
