(CHICAGO) Gov. Bruce Rauner will likely sign the recently passed school funding bill tomorrow, alongside Cardinal Blase Cupich. Meanwhile, the Illinois Secretary of Education is praising the bill.
Secretary Beth Purvis tells Ramblin’ Ray on WLS that the bill is a win for everybody.
“Everybody is getting something in this bill and most importantly the children of Illinois are going to get a school funding formula that recognizes that every district has different needs and will set an adequacy target for that and then we’ll distribute new state dollars in a away that it get to those scholars that are neediest first,” Purvis said. “But in addition to that we have school choice, there is mandate relief there is property tax relief so this is truly a very complex bill but a true compromise that I think Republicans and Democrats can rally around.”
The bill, passed by the House on Monday and the Senate on Tuesday, also provides $75 million for a tax credit for people who donated to private school scholarships. That provision has drawn criticism from teacher unions but Purvis says it opens up the opportunity for businesses to create scholarships for students to attend those private schools.
