(CHICAGO) In the race for governor, Democrat JB Pritzker’s running-mate State Representative Juliana Stratton got a bill thru the Illinois House Tuesday promoting jailhouse voting.
If you’re in jail awaiting trial, you can vote by mail. If you’re in prison because you were convicted of a crime, you can’t vote.
During debate, Stratton said her bill would tell election officials to make that clear to the jailers, “At a time when we have some jurisdictions that are offering a voting program, but many others are not.”
But Republican State Representative Peter Breen voted no, “We are so concerned about the rights of criminals. They get to vote and their victims don’t.”
