(CHICAGO) There’s local reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision to side with the baker who refused to bake a same-sex marriage cake.
Greg Harris, the Illinois State Representative who led the movement to put same-sex marriage on the books in Illinois, calls it a very dangerous precedent.
“Very disappointed in what the supreme court did,” says Harris. “Essentially they created a right to discriminate today where individual businesses can pick and choose which customers they would like to have and apparently can now turn down customers based on some characteristic such as sexual orientation, race, religion or something else. I think this’ll set a very bad precedent.”
Harris said Illinois has a very strong human rights statute but it’ll be up to the lawyers to figure out how the supreme court ruling affects it.
