Family members say the suspect in Sunday’s horrific stabbing attack at a New York Hanukkah celebration has a “long history of mental illness”.

In a statement, family of 37-year-old Grafton Thomas says while he has been hospitalized for mental illness, but but doesn’t have a violent past or history of anti-semitism. Records show Thomas has a previous arrest for assaulting a police horse.

Grafton is behind bars on attempted murder charges after allegedly bursting into a rabbi’s home with a machete, wounding five people.
