| Get green with the Citizens Utility Board |
The Citizens Utility Board (CUB) has been fighting for Illinois consumers for more than 25 years. Now they are bringing WLS listeners some “green tips” that will also save them cold, hard cash.
1. Switch to CFLs. These energy-saving bulbs use 75% less energy than traditional light bulbs, and each CFL can cut your electric bill by up to $10 a year. Take CUB’s CFL pledge, install at least 1 CFL , and enter a chance to win 10,000 free bulbs for your community.
2. Buy super-efficient Energy Star appliances. They can cut bills by up to 30%.
3. Install a programmable thermostat. In the winter, set your thermostat a few degrees cooler when you are not home. You can shave off 1-2% of your energy bill fir every degree you lower the temperature for at least 8 hours.
4. Weather-proof your home. Seal and fill leaks with weather stripping and caulking to prevent cold air from entering your home.
5. Reduce hot water temperature. Set your water heater to the “normal” setting or 120 degrees F
6. Use sunlight wisely. During the heating season, leave shades and blinds open on sunny days, but close them at night to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows. Close shades and blinds during the summer or when the air conditioner is in use or will be in use later in the day.
