Durbin, other lawmakers visit troubled Ill. VA | ||||||
MARION, Ill. (AP) -- Members of Illinois' congressional delegation will be visiting a southern Illinois Veterans Affairs hospital to discuss with administrators there how its lingering troubles can be fixed. Major surgeries at the Marion VA the lawmakers planned to tour Thursday have been suspended for more than two years after a spike in patient deaths there. Last week, the VA's inspector general released a report detailing insufficient progress in cleaning up lingering quality management problems at the site. Sen. Dick Durbin and others in Illinois' Capitol Hill delegation since then have met with the VA's secretary and its inspector general. A quality management team will be at the Marion VA for the next several weeks, after which Durbin and others expect a briefing on what changes will be made. © 2009 The Associated Press.
