Illinois Supreme Court to consider remap ballot measure

CHICAGO (AP) — The Illinois Supreme Court has agreed to quickly consider a case challenging the constitutionality of a ballot measure that could change the way Illinois draws political boundaries.

The court granted an emergency motion for direct appeal Friday, two days after a Cook County judge ruled the proposal didn’t meet narrow constitutional requirements. A group called the Independent Map Amendment sought an expedited appeal because of an Aug. 26 deadline to get on November’s ballot.

The group wants an 11-member commission to draw legislative boundaries, instead of leaving the process to party leaders.

An attorney linked to top Democrats sued on behalf of minority groups.

The court set a briefing schedule with deadlines on July 28, Aug. 4 and Aug. 9. The court didn’t indicate if there would be oral arguments.
