Once a showplace, Clock Tower to close with no reopening set

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — A one-time showcase resort hotel luring Interstate 90 travelers in Rockford is closing for repairs — but there’s no certain reopening date.

The Rockford Register Star reports the Clock Tower Resort accepted reservations for Saturday but told employees it would close after that.

The hotel has been hit with multiple building code violations. They include ones found by city inspectors after an Oct. 15 shooting that killed one and injured five others at a birthday party in adjoining guest rooms.

Industrialist Seth Atwood built the Clock Tower in 1968 and there housed a prized collection of clocks in The Time Museum.

The city says hotel owner Beltway Hospitality of Houston has made progress fixing serious code violations. Beltway denied responsibility for remaining violations at a hearing last week.
