Cook County Compromise Budget Passed

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s compromise budget  was approved by the County Board on a vote of 17-nothing.

More than 300 layoffs in this budget. One of the victims pleaded with the county commissioners not to do it, saying “Just please find some other resources because this will be so detrimental, not just to me, but to all my brothers and sisters.”

But after the unanimous to do it, President Preckwinkle at least felt bad about it, noting “This was the hardest budget since my first year in office. Laying off more than 300 of our hard-working and dedicated employees is extremely difficult. Behind every layoff there is a person and often a family with bills to pay. You heard from some of those people today and it was heart-breaking. I regret that we have to take these personnel actions.”

But she did because her penny per ounce pop tax was repealed.
