Cincinnati officials are praising a mother of five who shot her ex-boyfriend several times on Thursday.

The incident occurred at 4:30 a.m., just after Dante Ruff kicked out a window A/C unit in an attempt to enter the unidentified woman’s East Price Hill home. Hearing the ruckus, the woman came downstairs and started shooting, striking Ruff in the stomach “several times,” police say. He was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. He’s currently listed in serious but stable condition.

Hamilton County prosecutor Joseph Deters says the woman had an order of protection against Ruff and a permit to carry a gun. “Thank goodness she had a Concealed Carry Permit and was able to defend herself and her five children,” Deters says. Once Ruff recovers, he’ll face charges of aggravated burglary and violation of a protection order, Deters says.
