Italian Police Arrest Migrant-Rescue Ship Captain after Docking

After a two-week standoff, Italy’s interior minister ordered the arrest of Carola Rackete, a ship captain who rescued 53 migrants drifting off the coast of Libya. Rackete says the Sea-Watch was forced to enter Italian waters after trying to cooperate with several different European ports. Sea-Watch’s mission carries out rescue missions within the Meditteranean.

Matteo Salvini, Italy’s interior minister called Rackete a “rich, white German woman” and accused her of trying to ram police boats with her ship. He also called her attempts to port “an act of war.” Rackete said she was forced to dock for the safety of all aboard her ship.
