Japan Resumes Commercial Whaling After 30-Year Ban

For the first time in three decades, Japan has resumed the controversial practice of commercial whaling.

The country has been widely criticized after announcing last year that it would withdraw from the International Whaling Commission and resume hunting minke and Baird’s beaked whales, two species that are not endangered.

Whaling has been banned internationally since 1986, but Japan has continued to hunt whales for ‘scientific purposes’, arguing that eating whale is an important part of its culture.
