A former NASA intern says he owns the only existing video footage of the 1969 moon landing – and he’s selling it to the highest bidder.
Back in 1976, former NASA intern Gary George bought 65 boxes of videotapes for $217 at a government auction. Three of those tapes turned out to include video footage of the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing – the sharpest video of the landmark event in existence.
Now he’s putting the tapes up for sale via the auction house Sotheby’s – who confirmed that the video is “faultless”. Bidding begins at $700,000 and the tapes are expected to fetch as much as $2 million.
The auction will begin on July 20th – the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.
