Judge Temporarily Blocks Arkansas Abortion Restrictions

Once again, a state’s new more restrictive abortion rules have been blocked by a federal judge.

Late Tuesday night, a U.S. District judge issued a temporary 14-day block on three new measures in Arkansas that were set to take effect on Wednesday.

The new rules, which ban abortion after 18 weeks and raise requirements for doctors who perform abortions, likely would have forced the state’s only surgical abortion clinic to close.

The laws are being challenged in court by Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and other organizations.

Several states including Missouri, Louisiana, and Ohio have passed stricter abortion rules in recent months, but most have been either blocked by a judge or deemed unenforceable.
