The federal government is officially bringing back the death penalty.

On Thursday, U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr announced that the Justice Department would bring back capital punishment and schedule executions for five death-row inmates, all convicted murderers.

There have been no federal executions since 2003, and only three since 1988. In a statement, Barr said “we owe it to the victims and their families to carry forward the sentence imposed by our jusice system”.
