Many have taken to social media to decry the more than 73,000 wildfires currently burning through the Amazon rainforest, which has been dubbed the Lungs of Earth because the area produces 20 percent of the planet’s oxygen.

According to environmental groups, the ecological disaster is man-made, not the product of heat and wind, with smoke able to be seen from space.

Satellite photos from the National Institute for Space research show an 84 percent increase in fires across Brazil from this time last year.
