Three California parents are facing hate crime charges after police say they kidnapped and assaulted a boy found hiding in their daughter’s bedroom closet.

According to police, the 15-year-old girl’s biological parents and stepfather used a rope to tie up the 17-year-old victim, who is African-American, for over half an hour while assaulting and threatening to kill him. The victim also claims his attackers used “multiple racial slurs”.

Family members say the parents thought the boy was an intruder and that he was “acting very violent”, punching the mother and kicking the step-father.

The trio is facing charges including kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. The girl is in custody of Child Protective Services.
