Detroit Man Sues After Being Wrongly Imprisoned for 34 Years

How much is 34 years of a man’s life worth? According to Darrell Siggers, about $150 million.

That’s how much Siggers is seeking in a lawsuit he’s filed against a pair of Detroit investigators for their roles in convicting him for a murder he didn’t commit. The suit names Claude Houseworth, a former firearms expert with the Detroit Police Department, and Sgt. Joseph Alex, the lead detective on Siggers’ case. According to attorney Wolfgang Mueller, Houseworth delivered false testimony and Alex manufactured evidence to expedite a “guilty” verdict against his client. “I think it is overzealous cops who have seen a lot of bad stuff in their day and become numb to the idea of what justice is,” Mueller says.

Siggers, who was released last year after new evidence proved his innocence, says the preceding 34 years were nothing short of a nightmare. “They chained me up, they put chains around my stomach they put chains around my wrist, my legs and chained me to like 20 other people,” he says. “I felt like a slave. Tears rolling down my face, I’m thinking about my mother and my father, the embarrassment, but behind all of that I’m innocent, I’m not supposed to be here.”
