A Denver woman is suing after giving birth alone in a jail cell, without any help from guards or medical staff.

The plaintiff, Diana Sanchez, was eight months pregnant when she was booked into Denver County Jail on identity theft charges.

On July 31st, she told authorities and medical workers she was experiencing contractions, but wasn’t taken to a hospital. She claims prison guards ignored her screams of pain and she was forced to give birth “on a cold, hard bench, feet away from a toilet”.

Prison officials say they have since changed their policies to ensure that pregnant inmates are taken to a hospital when they go into labor.
