An 18-year-old Utah girl says her vaping habit landed her in the ICU in a medically-induced coma.

Maddie Nelson says she vaped every day for three years, starting with nicotine-free juice but eventually moving to nicotine vapes.

Eventually, she became ill and was hospitalized, where doctors found a buildup of fluid and bacteria in her lungs called eosinophilic pneumonia. She spent three days in a coma and even now needs to take oxygen to sleep at night.

Doctors told Maddie that the moisture from inhaling vapes is “the perfect environment for bacteria to grow inside your lungs”. The CDC has recently warned about the growing link between vaping and severe lung disease.
