A New Jersey mayor claims he was detained by Border Patrol for more than three hours simply because he is Muslim.

Mohamed Khairullah, mayor of Prospect Park, NJ, was returning to the U.S. from Turkey when he was stopped for a random screening. He says he was interrogated about his family, where he’d traveled, and if he had met with any terrorists.

Khairullah, who moved to the U.S. as a teenager in 1991, called it “flat-out stereotyping of Muslims and Arabs”, adding “this is not the America that I know”.

A CBP spokesperson would not address the specific case but said the agency “treats all international travelers with integrity, respect and professionalism”.
