Former French President Jacques Chirac Dies at 86

Former French President Jacques Chirac died at his home in Paris Thursday at 86. Chirac served as President of France from 1995-2007 with a career that included strong objections to the U.S. Iraq war and an embezzlement conviction.

Chirac’s popularity soared in 2003 when he and his French government strongly objected to former U.S. President George W. Bush’s push for a military strike aimed at Iraq. Chirac threatened to veto a U.N. resolution over the strike, calling a strike illegal. He also pushed for action on climate change throughout the end of his presidency.

Chirac’s image took a hit internationally throughout his presidency for targeting immigrants, objecting to family reunification at a 1991 rally. Chirac was also convicted of embezzlement in 2011 for using public money to finance his political party.
