When the British government needed a name for their new polar research ship back in 2016, they turned to the public, who voted to christen it Boaty McBoatface.

While the title did eventually go to a small, autonomous submarine, officials wanted to make sure the vessel had a proper name.

On Thursday, both Prince William and his wife Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge were on hand for the official ceremony, declaring the ice-breaker the RSS Sir David Attenborough, after the famed naturalist and broadcaster.

“It is my immense privilege and relief to welcome Sir David Attenborough, rather than Boaty McBoatface, to speak,” said William before Attenborough took the microphone.
