Pete Buttigieg says he disagrees with fellow 2020 hopeful Beto O’Rourke’s proposal to strip tax-exempt status from churches that oppose same-sex marriage.

Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, Buttigieg said he wasn’t sure O’Rourke “understood the implications of what he was saying”, arguing that stripping tax-exempt status from churches could further divide the country.

O’Rourke, meanwhile, doubled down on his comments, telling MSNBC “You are not allowed to discriminate against people in this country”. Both Buttigieg and O’Rourke will be on the stage for Tuesday’s Democratic primary debate in Ohio.
