FL Senate Votes to Remove Former Sheriff Following Parkland Shooting

The Florida Senate voted to remove elected Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel from his position over his failures to respond to both 2017’s Fort Lauderdale airport shooting and the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Florida’s Lieutenant Governor said that the Senate “voted on the side of accountability” and that Israel “neglected his responsibilities, endangered the public’s safety and failed our children.”

Israel’s attorney calls the Senates move political, saying the decision “wasn’t based on fact or law but based on pure desire and power.” Israel, at this time, plans to run for sheriff in 2020.
