An internal investigation into the hacking of WhatsApp discovered senior government and military officials had been targeted.

Sources told Reuters that the breach affected officials in at least 20 countries across five continents. In response, WhatsApp filed a lawsuit Tuesday against NSO Group. Alleging the Israeli hacking tool developer built and sold software that exploited a flaw in WhatsApp.

It isn’t know who was behind the hacks; however, NSO says it exclusively sells spyware to government customers.

WhatsApp warned affected users this week. Some have come forward including journalists, academics, and lawyers in India.
