With 81 percent of Michigan’s transgender population lacking proper identification, one elected official has implemented a easier method to change gender designation on driver’s licenses.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson on Monday revealed a new “streamlined” procedure that no longer requires a birth certificate, passport or court order for a corrected I.D. Instead, transgender license holders need only report to a local DMV, pay $9 and pose for a new photo, Benson said.

“The transgender community has faced both marginalization and violence without proper identification,” Benson said. “This change returns to a policy that was in place before the issue was politicized, and that was utilized by both a Republican and Democrat secretary of state.”
