Police in Gaineseville, Georgia say a 16-year-old girl was planning a deadly attack on a local black church.

Police say the white teen, who was not named, had a notebook in which she wrote out her plan to kill churchgoers based on their race. Police were tipped off after the girl’s classmates told school officials about the notebook.

The chief of police says a “potentially horrific incident” was avoided. The teen is being held in a youth detention center and is charged with criminal attempt to commit murder.
