A North Carolina sheriff’s deputy has been suspended after he was caught on video slamming a middle school student to the ground.

Surveillance video shows the officer walking down an empty hallway with a student when he suddenly grabs the boy and slams him to the ground, then picks him up and does it again before dragging him off. Authorities say the victim was under 12 years old.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the school investigates. One teacher told a local news station the man was “a very kind-hearted officer” who was “almost like a father figure” to students.
