Chicago’s Homicide Rate Has Decreased for Third Straight Year

For the third straight year in a row, Chicago has seen a decrease in the homicide rate.

For 2019, the city recorded 490 murders.

This is 13% lower than 2018 when the city recorded 564.

2016 was one of the worst years in Chicago’s history with 756 homicides.

The Interim Police Superintendent announced a 17% reduction in robberies citywide and an 18% reduction in burglaries.

City leaders credit community policing and investments in social services and schools for the drop.
