The Scope Of The Australian Fires Compared To A Map Of The US

It’s pretty hard to wrap heads around the scale of just how widespread are the bushfires burning across Australia.

Sparked back in September, over 12 million acres of land have burned, with over 1,500 homes destroyed. More than 20 people have died along with an estimated 480 million animals.

Just in the state of New South Wales alone, the Rural Fire Service reported 146 fires, with 65 still uncontained as of Sunday.

To put that into perspective, the Sonoma County Fire District in California overlaid a map of the country onto the United States. If on this side of the planet, America would be burning from coast to coast in dozens of states.
