FBI Arrests NJ Police Sgt. Accused Of Stealing Money From Drug Suspects

Federal investigators have arrested a New Jersey police sergeant who they say stole thousands of dollars from drug suspects and doled the cash out to his fellow officers.

Michael Cheff was taken into custody on Tuesday, charged with civil rights violations and filing false records, according to court documents.

Five officers from the Patterson Police department who were under Cheff have entered plea deals for conspiring in the illegal stops and thefts.

The city’s mayor, Andre Sayegh, told NPR there is “zero tolerance for crooked cops,” adding, “This should serve as a cautionary tale that crime doesn’t pay especially in law enforcement.”
