NASA shutting down Spitzer telescope

After sending back 36 million images, discovering an unseen Saturn ring, finding seven Earth-size planets, and watching 800,00 targets over its 16 years in space, NASA is powering down the Spitzer Space Telescope.

The observatory will be put into permanent hibernation tomorrow, PBS reports.

Around 4,000 scientists globally were part of the program that churned out about 9,000 studies.

The infrared telescope was only expected to last up to 5 years and had become more difficult to control as its distance from Earth increased.
