Authorities have found an underground drug smuggling tunnel between Mexico and the U.S. that they say is longer than they’ve ever seen before.

Announcing the discovery on Wednesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said the sophisticated passageway stretches more than three-quarters of a mile, with part of it running directly under a recently fortified portion of the border. U.S. Deputy Chief Aaron Heitke says criminals have been using it to smuggle “people, narcotics, weapons and ammunition” into the country.

The past five years have seen a dramatic increase in drug seizures at U.S. borders, with cocaine seizures doubling, meth seizures increasing by 170 percent and fentanyl seizures skyrocketing 3,500 percent, CBP officials say.
