Target Raised Wages but Cut Workers’ Hours and Doubled Their Workload

While Target plans to raise their minimum wage to $15 an hour by the end of 2020, workers at the retail chain tell The Guardian that the company’s “modernization plan” also means their hours are getting drastically reduced and their workloads are getting doubled. Many employees who worked at least 38 hours per week were cut to less than ten hours a week once Target raised their minimum wage.

A survey of more than 500 Target workers around the United States found that only 12.7% say that could survive on their Target wages alone. 56% of the workers surveyed said they have faced food insecurity while working at Target.

54% of the surveyed employees also said that they were told not to openly discuss wages while nearly 42% said they know employees who were reprimanded for talking about workplace issues.

A Target rep told The Guardian “We consistently hear from our team that they are satisfied with the company’s pay, benefits and experiences.”
