Chelsea Manning Hospitalized After Suicide Attempt

According to her legal team, former U.S. Army analyst Chelsea Manning attempted suicide Wednesday while in a Virginia jail.

The 32-year-old has been in jail since May 2019 for refusing to testify before a grand jury investigating WikiLeaks.

Manning is in the hospital recovering and is still expected to appear in court for a hearing Friday, on a motion to terminate the civil contempt sanctions stemming from her May refusal.

Manning told reporters last March she declined to answer grand jury questions based on her First, Fourth, and Sixth Amendment rights.

She told the judge in May she’d “rather starve to death” than comply with the subpoena.

Manning served seven years in a military prison for leaking a trove of documents to WikiLeaks before President Barack Obama commuted the remainder of her 35-year sentence in 2017.

U.S. District Judge Claude Hilton told Manning that she would remain in federal custody “until she purges or the end of the life of the grand jury,” a statement from her representatives said.
