Following an agreement with Canada to restrict tourist and visitor travel across the northern border, the US is now working with Mexico to do the same in an effort to prevent the further spread of coronavirus.

According to the State Department, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with his Mexican counterpart on Thursday to discuss “the importance of creating a uniform North American strategy to reduce public health risks to our communities and more effectively address rising challenges jointly.”

Paola Avila, the chair of the Border Trade Alliance, notes that “essential” workers such as farm hands, employees of restaurants and grocery stores, and bus drivers, would be exempt.

In addition, the State Department issued its highest possible level travel advisory, asking all Americans to return home and not travel internationally.
