Virginia residents have a reason to celebrate; they’re getting a day off from work in November.
Among the pieces of legislation signed by Governor Ralph Northam, Election Day will become a state holiday, following in the footsteps of Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, and New York.
In addition, voters won’t have to show a photo ID at the booth and can cast a ballot up to 45 days in advance of the election.
In a statement released Sunday, the Democrat said, “Voting is a fundamental right, and these new laws strengthen our democracy by making it easier to cast a ballot, not harder,” adding, “No matter who you are or where you live in Virginia, your voice deserves to be heard. I’m proud to sign these bills into law.”
