11-Year-Old Reels in Toddler-Sized Trout

While various sources compare its size to that of a toddler, large dog or small surf board, one thing’s for sure: the trout caught by 11-year-old Tanner Wilson was big .

The Colorado youth was fishing with his dad in Colorado earlier this month when he reeled in the three-foot-long lake trout, which weighed between 30 and 35 pounds, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials confirm. The fish, also known as a mackinaw, didn’t come peacefully, either — Wilson says he fought with it for more than 15 minutes before he finally pulled it out of the water.

The common length of a lake trout is 19.7 inches, Fish and Wildlife data reveals. While Wilson’s catch easily exceeds that, it still falls short of the record: 57 inches. Not that the youth will have to make room on his bedroom wall to display it; after having his dad take a few photos, he released the monster-sized fish back into the lake.
