Illinois Reports Biggest Single-Day Increase in COVID-19 Deaths to Date

Health officials in Illinois say 176 people died from COVID-19 between Monday and Tuesday — marking the state’s largest single-day increase to date.

In addition to the new figure — which brings the state’s death toll to 2,838 — the Illinois Department of Health also reports 2,122 people tested positive for COVID-19 over the past day. The state is now home to 65,962 confirmed cases, per the Department of Health.

The dismal numbers come one day after Governor JB Pritzker shared “encouraging” news, revealing only 46 people had died in the past 24 hours — the lowest it had been in two weeks. “I’m hopeful, you know, when I saw this number today,” Pritzker said Monday. “I was hopeful that this was the beginning or, you know, a continuation of a trend that I’ve been praying for.”
