A 10-year-old Kentucky boy has been placed on a ventilator after he contracted what doctors believe is a new syndrome associated with the coronavirus.

Dr. Steven Stack says the boy appears to be suffering from a syndrome that causes a person’s immune system to become hyperactive, resulting in an “extensive inflammatory response” in the body. The illness, which leaves its victim with respiratory or gastrointestinal issues, has occurred in just a few young patients, he notes. The boy, who Stack says is “critically ill,” is the only child in Kentucky known to have been diagnosed with syndrome.

Unfortunately, doctors have yet to determine how to prevent the condition — much less treat it, Stack says.
