Facebook will pay out $52 million to the people who work to keep the platform free of graphic or disturbing material.

The company employs an army of moderators who work to remove such materials – which can include deeply disturbing images like child sexual abuse, violent murders, and animal cruelty.

But viewing that kind of material day in and day out can lead to PTSD, according to a class action lawsuit that claimed Facebook wasn’t doing enough to protect those the mods from psychological harm.

The $52 million settlement will go towards medical treatment and additional payments for more than 10,000 moderators in four states.
