Health Expert Calls Reopening Efforts a ‘Death Sentence’

As states all over the country move forward with plans to lift coronavirus restrictions and end stay-at-home orders, a prominent U.S. pediatrician is warning of the fatal consequences that could result.

Dr. Irwin Redlener says he fears the push to restore the economy before the coronavirus is under control will likely prompt a resurgence of the pandemic that will drive up the death toll. “Early premature reopening for our local businesses is going to be a death sentence for people, there’s no question about it,” Redlener says. “There’s going to be surges. We’re already seeing surges in Georgia.”

Georgia, which has already lifted such restrictions as its ban on in-person dining, on Tuesday reported 34,848 COVID-19 cases and 1,494 deaths.
