House Package Includes $25 Billion For Postal Service

With mail volume down by 30 percent due to the coronavirus pandemic, the US Postal Service is in need of a cash infusion otherwise it could run out of money by September.

On Tuesday, House Democrats put together a $25 billion rescue package that also included the repeal of several restrictions on a $10 billion line of credit previously authorized.

The proposal is expected to get a full vote on Friday, but the Associated Press notes it could get held up by the Senate, with majority leader Mitch McConnell saying there is no need for “urgency”.

Speaking to Congress last month, Postmaster General Megan Brennan admitted, “The sudden drop in mail volumes, our most profitable revenue stream, is steep and may never fully recover.”
