Supreme Court Hears Case On Electoral College Rules

The Supreme Court is hearing arguments on a case that could fundamentally change the Electoral College and how U.S. elections are handled.

The Court will determine whether members of the Electoral College are bound to cast their ballot for the candidate chosen by voters.

So-called ‘faithless electors’ are rare but do exist – in 2016, three Washington electors voted for Colin Powell, while a Colorado elector voted for John Kasich.

The Court’s decision could impact the 2020 presidential election. 32 states currently have laws that require electors to vote for the winning candidate.
